Do I Need an Invitation Letter to Attend the Canton Fair?
Quick answer: You do not need a formal invitation letter to enter the Canton Fair. Any genuine buyer can get a buyer badge. But you do need a China visa and a Canton Fair buyer badge, and an invitation letter can make your visa process faster and smoother.
What this guide covers
The Canton Fair is open to genuine business buyers
The Canton Fair, also known as the China Import and Export Fair, is a trade only event and is not open to the general public. But it does not require a personal invitation to attend. As long as you are a legitimate business buyer such as an importer, trader, manufacturer, wholesaler or sourcing professional, you can register for a buyer badge, which is your actual entry pass to the exhibition halls, entirely independent of any invitation.
What you actually need as an Indian visitor
- A valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining beyond your travel dates.
- A China visa. This is mandatory for Indian passport holders. Options include a tourist visa, a business visa, or the 144 hour transit route via Hong Kong for short stays, each covered in detail in our dedicated visa guide.
- A Canton Fair buyer badge, obtained online in advance or on site at Pazhou with your passport and business details.
Where the invitation letter really matters, your visa
While the fair itself does not demand an invitation, a China business visa application is often stronger and processed faster when supported by an invitation letter from a supplier, a trade body, or a delegation organiser. Many first time Indian buyers under prepare the visa side of their trip while over preparing the badge side, when in reality the visa is the step that benefits most from an invitation letter and the longest lead time.
How to get your Canton Fair buyer badge
- Register online through the official Canton Fair buyer portal before you travel, providing your passport and company details, or register on site at the Pazhou complex if you have not pre-registered.
- Provide your passport and basic company details, such as your business name and the product categories you are sourcing.
- Collect your badge, which is reusable across all three phases of the same fair edition once issued.
Who can issue an invitation letter
An invitation letter for your visa application can come from a few different sources. A supplier you already have an established relationship with can issue one confirming a planned business meeting. A Canton Fair delegation organiser, such as ours, can issue an invitation as part of a guided group trip. In some cases, a relevant trade promotion body or chamber of commerce may also support your application. Whichever source you use, the letter should clearly state the business purpose of your visit and your planned dates.
What a good invitation letter includes
A strong invitation letter states the inviting company's full name and registration details, the purpose of your visit framed clearly around business meetings or the fair itself, your planned arrival and departure dates, and a contact person and phone number the consulate can verify if needed. Vague, generic letters that do not name specific dates or a clear business purpose are less effective at strengthening a visa application than a specific, detailed one. If you are travelling with our delegation, we prepare this documentation as part of your booking, timed to support your visa application rather than arrive too late to be useful.
